People & Products | Doctor Bear

Today we’re lucky enough to be joined by the lovely team behind Doctor Bear – a local group of Doctors who are also Mums. Today we find out about how Doctor Bear came about and what type of courses they offer for parents. So let’s hand over to Dr Rebecca, Dr Carolyn, Dr Bianca, and Dr Siobhan..

We are a group of four mummies who are also Paediatricians. We started our company ‘Doctor Bear’ after a coffee shop discussion with our youngest children in tow.  We are frequently asked questions by our mummy friends on issues around childhood illnesses and unsurprisingly, the same questions keep coming up again and again.  We decided that we are in a unique position of being able to offer up to date medical advice coupled with personal experience, and so Doctor Bear was born!

We run workshops for parents and carers of children to find out about childhood illness, how to manage accidents, injuries and administer first aid. All of our workshops involve practical hands on experience of managing emergencies such as choking. We also arrange bespoke courses for small groups, usually hosted in their own homes, with the option of choosing talks and practical sessions to suit their needs.  These have become increasingly popular and we have talked to Mums, Dads, nannies, au pairs, grandparents and often a mixture of all the above!

Between us we have fifty years of paediatric experience and we all work in central London teaching hospitals. We care for children from newborn (including those born very early) up until teenagers ready to leave school. We are all mothers and have 9 children between us from a few months to 6 years old. We know how scary it can be to look after our own children when they are ill and recognise that there can be a lot of information that is not always correct available to anxious parents and carers. Our aim is to provide up to date and correct medical information in a way that is easy to understand and remember. Our workshops cover topics that we think are important and our friends have told us they wanted to know about.

There are currently 3 different public courses that we regularly offer:

• Common childhood illness

• Accidents, injuries and first aid

• Baby Bears (for under 6 months)

We also blog regularly about topical issues around children’s health – usually using examples from our own experience. Our blog can be found on our website  We also post it on Instagram #doctorbears and on our FB page @doctorbearcourses.

“The Doctor Bear team recently did a bespoke course at my house for a small group of parents and au pairs. We looked at both minor and major injuries and I now feel so much more confident dealing with any scrapes my children may get into and making that all important decision about when a hospital visit is necessary. The practical sessions were great in making sure we all took on board exactly what to do it a child is choking or not breathing and the Dr Bear team were really clear in their advice. It was great to be taught by people who actually deal with medical emergencies on a daily basis and are not just quoting from a text book. Would highly recommend.”  DR, April 2017

“Excellent evening equipping ourselves with valuable health knowledge for our little ones. Siobhan and Rebecca were excellent teachers, I liked the mix of their experience as mums and paediatricians. I learnt lots I didn’t know and would recommend to any new mums and dads.” JC, November 2017
