Steph is the founder of Chalk Kids, which is a parenting and lifestyle blog dedicated to young and style conscious families. Below she tells us her favourite stores where she buys her sons clothes.
Something I’ve found surprising since becoming a mama to my two-year-old son, Finlay (who has just been joined by a little brother) is how much I’ve loved choosing his daily outfits. I used to think you couldn’t have as much fun dressing boys as you can with girls, but I’ve been relieved to find this isn’t the case. There’s actually an array of cool kidswear available for boys – if you know where to look that is!
If you pop into stores on the highstreet you’ll instantly notice the quantity difference between the boys and girls sections – Girls clothing tends to dominate, whilst the boys get a little section in the corner. It’s something I’d occasionally hear my husband complain about and now that I have to shop in boys departments I can see where he’s coming from! However, thankfully online it’s a whole different ball game.
When shopping for myself and my children I firmly believe in quality over quantity. I’d much rather dress the boys in clothing that is durable and comfortable, then buy them multiple outfits that only get worn once or twice. Therefore I don’t tend to buy masses and instead I select their wardrobe staples carefully and then throw in the odd fun patterned piece too – I love unisex clothing and always steer clear of anything that is too gender specific.
Here are some of my favourite brands that I’ve recently been buying from.
Nor_Folk is run by the lovely Fiona and her team. Their items are great quality, true to size and so practical. Finlay’s Play Hard and No. 2 tees are often my go-to tops to dress him in. On chillier days I simply layer them with a long sleeved vest.
Available via Nor-Folk
In my opinion, Mingo Kids make some of the comfiest and stylish basics on the market. They’re excellent quality, whilst also being good value for money. Finlay lives in his striped harem bottoms, which go with just about everything making them super practical. Recently I’ve also picked him up some of their brushed teddy leggings, a simple black sweater and a striped scarf.
Available via Bon Tot.
For our new baby I’ve recently come across the brand 1+ in the family. You won’t find any typical baby blues and pinks, instead there’s a focus on soft greys, pastel shades and neutral tones. It’s great if you’re not finding out the gender of your baby, plus the materials they use are so beautiful and soft.

The stand out A/W 15 collection for me this season has to be, Tiny Cottons. They’ve simply nailed it! Once again, I’ve always been impressed with the quality of Tiny Cottons – Their items feel just as wonderful as they look.
